An illustrated figure from earlier this year has just been published in Land Use Policy.
The figure shows the pros and cons of plant riparian margins, experienced by New Zealand dairy farmers. (A)There are costs and benefits to production, environmental and social values in having dedicated riparian margins left as grass cover, and (B) there are additional pros and cons when the riparian margin is fully vegetated.
We adapted the figure from Taranaki Regional Council riparian planting programme support material (http://www.trc.govt.nz/riparian-management/).

Read the paper:
Maseyk FJF, Dominati EJ, White T & Mackay AD. 2016. Farmer perspectives of the on-farm and off-farm pros and cons of planted multifunctional riparian margins. Land Use Policy 61 (2017): 160-170.
