About

Michelle freelances in science and nature illustration, from Brisbane, Australia.
She has a Bachelor of Science in Ecology and Conservation Biology and is a self-trained artist, learning scientific illustration from colleagues since 2006. Professionally, she is a practicing member of the Australian Institute of Medical and Biological Illustration. Her work was displayed in the Queensland Museum as part of the GNSI conference in 2019. Michelle has worked for researchers at CSIRO, Queensland Museum and universities around Australia.
Michelle's art extends beyond realism into other creative genres - enquiries welcome.

Scientific illustration

Scientific illustrations are completed for academic researchers, for publication in peer-reviewed journals and books.
Michelle uses mostly traditional illustration techniques (pencil and ink) to produce technical illustrations of specimens to scale, drawing from the microscope with a camera lucida. Ink drawings are made using the detailed stippling technique with Rotring pens. Of those published thus far, her work contributes to the taxonomic descriptions of over 250 species, of which about 170 were described as new species.

Nature illustration

Michelle's experience in science illustration carries over to nature illustrations. She works from reference photos to create new compositions and uses pencil, ink, watercolour and gouache. Works have been used in books, documents and video as spot illustrations or full-page, as well as logos and project branding.
